WILD ONES – “DIM THE LIGHTS”

Wild Ones

Wild Ones | “Dim the Lights” | Heatwave EP

This week we’re happy to present Wild Ones , a Portland-based indie pop group, and our first featured artists from Topshelf Records. The east-coast label houses an eclectic group of amazing bands, but none me quite as excited as Wild Ones . The band’s new single, “Dim the Lights,” boasts a chorus that embeds itself deep within one’s subconscious, where they’ll have a hell of a time getting it out.

The song begins with a bit of a groovy, almost ‘70s feel, but seemingly blasts into the next few decades as it gains speed. Still, the song stays true to its initial “groovy” feel, chugging along as a nighttime drive through a futuristic city.

Listen to “Dim the Lights” below and heed the instructions of the title. Also make sure to check out Wild Ones’ new EP, Heatwave.

HAZEL ENGLISH – “IT’S NOT REAL”

Hazel English | “It’s Not Real”

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – 2015 is the year of the Aussie. Although this time, it’s an Australian transplant living in Oakland. Singer-songwriter Hazel English delivers her second track, which is titled “It’s Not Real.” Fortunately, the title isn’t a reflection of the song – the track is very real.

Hazel English is an endearing songstress, and proves this by interweaving whimsical lyrics into poppy, noodling guitars. The feel and sound of the song teeters between dream pop, ‘90s shoegaze and new wave. It’s an interesting mix and absolutely works.

ICONA POP – “FIRST TIME”

Icona Pop | “First Time” | Emergency

If I ever hear Icona Pop ’s “I Love It” one more time, I will strangle someone. It’s not that it was a bad song – quite the opposite, really. The song of the summer was played into the ground and maybe all the way into the earth’s molten core. The mere mention of the Swedish pop duo’s name caused me to shudder, remembering that chorus for the billionth time: “ I DON’T CARE. I LOVE IT. I DON’T CARE.”

No, really. I DO CARE. I HATE IT.

Fortunately after today, I can say I love these two girls again.

Icona Pop ’s new single “First Time” is an insanely well-crafted pop song. It doesn’t revolve around an insanely catchy chorus (although you’ll still be humming it for a bit, promise), and showcases the duo’s true musical talents. The late ‘80s/ early ‘90s hip-hop feel of the track really suits Icona Pop – I’ll never think of them the same way again. Even if this song tops the charts and gets to “Song-of-the-Summer” status, I’ll be OK with it. I hope…

LITTLE BOOTS – “WORKING GIRL”

Little-Boots

Little Boots | “Working Girl”| Working Girl

“Working Girl,” a new track from England’s Little Boots , manages to weasel its sugarcoated beats into the dance floor of my brain – I’m really having trouble getting them out. The emerging electropop artist channels her inner 1990s dance goddess, satisfying the musical cravings of anyone who misses the dreamy, undeniably catchy  Top 40 songs from that decade. “Working Girl” lands on the musical spectrum between fellow British dance superstar Kylie Minogue and faux-British pop-music icon Madonna. For Little Boots , being in the company of those two is definitely a good thing.
